Odour of chickens could prevent malaria, Zika - Scientists

Image
It sounds like a pretty 'fowl' suggestion but the odour of chickens could be the key to preventing malaria or even  Zika , scientists believe. Experiments by Swedish and Ethiopian scientists found that mosquitoes steer clear of homes which contain a live chicken suspended in a cage. The researchers believe mosquitoes are wary of chickens because the birds eat the insects, and their blood is not nutritious enough to be worth the taking the risk. Crucially the mosquitos do not even have to see the chicken to be diverted. The smell alone creates a poultry ‘odour bubble’ which deters even the hungriest mosquito from going anywhere near the pungent source. Most mosquitoes will not even enter a house that contains a chicken, let alone a bedroom. But is suspending a chicken in your bedroom sounds a little extreme, scientists have isolated the chemical compounds and are now planning to develop a repellent. IMF and Finance minister Seth Terkper Ghana could lose out on the third tranche of $116 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) if government goes ahead to pass an amendment bill on borrowing from the Central Bank. The amendment to the Bank of Ghana Act will allow government to borrow from the Central Bank not more than 5% of the previous year's revenues. The Fund has become a supervisor of Ghana's economy after government entered into a 3-year extended credit facility agreement with the IMF in 2014. Ghana is expected to receive $918 million from the IMF, released in three separate tranches. If government behaves well according to the IMF, government gets approval for a tranche. After a first tranche of $116 million was transferred in January 2015 and another $114.6 million and a second
