Nana Addo dumps IEA

Image
The IEA evening encounter with the NPP flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo which was scheduled for August 9 has been called off, a statement by the policy think tank has said. It is unclear why the engagement with Akufo-Addo has been put on hold indefinitely. This is the second time the IEA has called off the evening session with the former attorney general after an initial date in July also failed to pull through. NPP flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo President John Mahama and the NDC have declined to participate in the encounters which appear to becoming a feature in Ghana’s elections beginning in 2000. Meanwhile, the flagbearer of the CPP Ivor Greenstreet and that of the PNC Edward Mahama have already appeared on the IEA platform. The evening encounters are meant for flagbearers to explain their plans and programs to Ghanaians and to answer questions for a selected group of individuals.

Ghana Freezes Sale of 4th Eurobond

Image
Ghana has had to scrap its 4th Eurobond sale in as many years after investors virtually rejected the freezes bond by demanding astronomic rates amid concerns on the health of the economy. A statement issued by the Finance Ministry announcing the scrapping of the Bond stated, “the Government will continue to build on this dialog with international investors while monitoring the markets and the IMF Board process with respect to the Third Review of the Program and will issue new notes at the optimal time and the right conditions.” The respected Bloomberg financial journal, only yesterday raised issues about the high rates investors were demanding for Ghana’s bonds despite a general fall in the rates of other bonds issued by other countries in Sub-saharan Africa. “The cost of floating the bond looks prohibitively expensive,” Celeste Fauconnier, Nema Ramkhelawan-Bhana and Neville Mandimika, analysts at Johannesburg-based RMB, said in a note on Tuesday according to Bloo

Montie Trio Brouhaha: CDD Statement Strange

Image
The Center for Democratic Development CDD has shot itself in the foot in its failed attempt to tow the middle line in the ensuing debate over the Montie 3 jailed by the Supreme Court for contempt. CDD, a governance think-tank, has condemned the harsh sentence slapped on the contemnors and the owners of the media house, Montie 100.10FM, yet has suggested a Presidential pardon will represent misuse of Executive power. Wonders indeed will never end. I read the CDD statement over and over again and I am scandalized by some of the issues raised, especially those regarding calls on President John Mahama to exercise his power of mercy under Article 72 of the Constitution to pardon the three, Salifu Maase, host of Montie FM Pampaso programme, Godwin Ako Gunn and Alistair Tairo Nelson who were both guests on the show. People from all walks of life are appealing to the President to free the trio who are serving four-month prison terms but CDD shares a strange view. A paragraph

Shekau Rejects Al-Barnawi, Says He Was Deceived By ISIS

Image
Abubakar Shekau, who was replaced by Islamic State as Boko Haram’s leader has spoken out about the news, claiming that he was betrayed and denouncing his purported new leader as an infidel. He said this in an audio message, his first in over one year, after IS on Tuesday published an interview with Sheikh Abu Musab al-Barnawi in its Al-Naba online weekly magazine in which he was introduced as Boko Haram’s new leader. In the interview, Barnawi talks about the history of jihad in this region but makes no clear reference to Shekau. Since March 2015, Barnawi has appeared in several videos distributed by Boko Haram, claiming responsibility for successive attacks, earning him the reputation of group spokesman, experts say. But in his message, Shekau takes aim at Barnawi, dismissing him as an infidel who condones living in an un-Islamic society without waging jihad. And in a tacit acknowledgement that his own position as leader may have been usurped, he speaks of being tric

RIO 2016: Brazil held by South Africa as Man City new boy Gabriel Jesus misses sitter

Brazil were held to a 0-0 draw by South Africa in their Olympic Games opener at Estadio Nacional Mané Garrincha in Brasilia. Brazil, who have never won the Olympic gold, started with a highly rated front three of Neymar, new Manchester City signing Gabriel Jesus, and Gabriel Barbosa, the 19-year old Santos striker who is expected to head to Europe before the transfer window shuts. But the little-known South Africans matched them until they had Mothobi Mvala sent off 10 minutes into the second half. Brazil pinned the visitors down for the rest of the game but could not score. "That's football," Barbosa told television cameras after the game. "Sometimes the ball doesn't go in the net." Barcelona striker Neymar had two of Brazil's best chances, forcing keeper Itumeleng Khune to make diving saves to thwart two rasping drives from outside the box.
