Security forces accused of shooting dead people in Oromia and Amhara regions in attempt to suppress wave of protests. Scores of people were killed across Ethiopia's Oromia and Amhara regions at the weekend as the security forces brutally suppressed a new wave of anti-government protests in two key regions. An opposition leader told the AFP news agency that up to 50 people were killed, while Amnesty International said that more than 90 were killed. The state-owned Ethiopian News Agency said "illegal protests" staged by "anti-peace forces" had been brought under control, but it did not mention casualties. Police fired tear gas and blocked roads to several towns in the vast Oromia region as demonstrations erupted after a call from a spontaneous social media movement. "We have reports of between 48 to 50 protesters killed in Oromia. This death toll might be higher because there were a lot of wounded," Merera Gudina, leader of the o

Republican Security Experts Rail Against Trump In Open Letter

Image
An open letter signed by 50 Republican national security experts has warned that nominee Donald Trump “would be the most reckless president” in US history. The group, which includes the former CIA director Michael Hayden, said Mr Trump “lacks the character, values and experience” to be president. Many of the signatories had declined to sign a similar note in March. In response, Mr Trump said they were part of a “failed Washington elite” looking to hold on to power. The open letter comes after a number of high-profile Republicans stepped forward to disown the property tycoon. Mr Trump has broken with years of Republican foreign policy on a number of occasions. The Republican candidate has questioned whether the US should honour its commitments to Nato, endorsed the use of torture and suggested that South Korea and Japan should arm themselves with nuclear weapons. “He weakens US moral authority as the leader of the free world,” the letter read. “He appears to lack basic

According to Kennedy Agyapong, the three might have learnt their lessons by then and there would be no need to keep them in prison for four months. Two radio panelists, Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn and show host, Salifu Maase of an Accra-based radio station, Montie FM were sentenced to four months' imprisonment by the Supreme Court on July 27, 2016, for threatening to kill judges of the Court. The three were also fined 10,000 cedis each while the owners of the frequency of the radio station, and the directors were fined 30,000 cedis respectively.
