Dr. Nana Obiri Yeboah: The Local Government System In The Country Must Change
Speaking on the back of the recent impasse between the chiefs of the Manhyia Palace and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly boss, Kojo Bonsu, Nana Obiri Yeboah said, issues like this, can be avoided if political actors at the local level, learn to respect traditional authorities.
He further added that, the Local Government Institute, should organize a training session for District Chief Executives (DCEs), and Metropolitan Chief Executives (MCEs), on decentralization and chieftaincy.
He said, the seemingly unending discrepancies between government appointees, at the local level, and traditional authorities, can be effectively dealt with, when traditional authorities are accorded the needed recognition.
Speaking on the XYZ Breakfast Show, he said: “My problem is the local government system, which marginalizes traditional authorities. Tell me which chief is represented in the District Assembly? It is represented by a politician who is an Assemblyman, who wants to show that he is even more important than the natural leaders of the people…………….Local government system must change! We need more representation from traditional authorities in that chamber and all these things will stop.”
The traditional expert also added that, development at the local level, can be greatly enhanced, if partisan politics is eschewed from local governance. He called on chiefs, to avoid singing praises for politicians.
“The people are asking their chiefs to bring development and the politician is discriminating: he has his enclave, he has his constituency.
He is now in power, so if you don’t shout and clap for him, he will deny you of development. Some places are not getting fair share of the National cake because they don’t belong to that politician’s divide,” he stressed.
