scientists use solar-powered machine to turn urine into beer

Image
Scientists at Belgium’s University of Ghent say they’ve created a machine that turns urine into potable water, and fertilizer, using solar energy. The scientists have since crafted small batches of Belgian ale from the recycled water. "We call it from sewer to brewer," Sebastiaan Derese, one of the researchers from the University of Ghent, told  Reuters . "We're able to recover fertiliser and drinking water from urine using just a simple process and solar energy." The machine collects urine in a big tank which is then heated in a solar-powered boiler. As the heated water evaporates it passes through a membrane, which separates the H2O from nutrients like phosphorous and nitrogen. Those nutrients can then be used to enrich fertilizers for plants. The water is then diverted to a separate tank. Since the system requires no electricity, the researchers hope it can be used to provide clean drinking water for people in developing coun

Soon after, he wrote on Twitter that if anyone had the emails, they should hand them over to the FBI. His appeal comes as Russia stands accused of hacking emails from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) for Mr Trump’s benefit. Both Russia and Mr Trump deny the allegation. “This has to be the first time that a major presidential candidate has actively encouraged a foreign power to conduct espionage against his political opponent,” Jake Sullivan, Mrs Clinton’s senior policy adviser, said. “This has gon

The Deputy Communications Director of the NPP, Anthony Karbo in an interview said Dumelo should be advised that he cannot ride on the back of the NPP to bring himself to the limelight in the political realm. “If Mr. Dumelo is interested in getting into the dirty gutter and unguarded politics of attack, he should know that this is the very party that took care of him sometime ago, when he was a student at KNUST, the party was there for him,” he cautioned in an interview. 'hyena man' arrested for having sex with children

Image
An HIV-positive Malawian man, who says he is paid to have sex with children as part of initiation rites, has been arrested on the president's orders. Eric Aniva, a sex worker known in Malawi as a "hyena", was the subject of a BBC feature last week. He told the BBC that he did not mention his HIV status to those who hire him. President Peter Mutharika said the police should investigate and charge him over the cases of defilement he had seemingly confessed to. The BBC's Ed Butler, who covered the story about Malawi's sexual "cleansing practices", says in some remote southern regions of the country it is traditional for girls to be made to have sex with a man after their first menstruation. Some of the girls are as young as 12 years old, he reported. What is known as a "hyena" in Malawi culture is usually a man who has sex with widows or married women who cannot fall pregnant. The Kumasi branch of the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG) says government’s initiative to convert the polytechnics into technical universities will boost academic progression in addition to their technical and vocational mandate. POTAG is angry with the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana over what it considers negative comments about government’s bid to convert polytechnics into technical universities. Members describe as baseless, unfounded and unfortunate, suggestions by Professor Ernest Aryeetey that the policy will not solve problems of polytechnics. Speaking at the 25th Anniversary celebration of NDK Financial Services in Accra, Professor Aryeetey said that, in principle, he is not opposed to the conversion but believes government cannot solve any problem simply by converting the polytechnics into universities. “Do you solve the problem by re-designating them?” he asked, adding, “Everybody knows polytechnics are poorly equipped and if yo

“Over-spiritualization” is making many Ghanaians non-critical thinkers

Image
It is gratifying to know that a spiritual leader of Reverend (Dr.) Emmanuel Asante’s caliber appears to have almost similar, genuine concerns as mine that more Ghanaians have become “overly spiritual” at the expense of critical thinking and pragmatism. Here is the reverend minister’s brilliant observation: “As soon as something terrible happens, instead of us [Ghanaians] investigating—finding out what might have been the cause and therefore trying to find a solution—we go for the cheap way, spiritual, and that mitigates any attempt to do serious investigations to try to find what is the actual cause of an event” (ref: Myjoyonline.com, Wednesday, 20, 2016). What makes the foregoing viewpoint most interestingly significant is where it comes from. Besides his recent retirement from the prestigious position as the presiding bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Dr. Emmanuel Asante has been serving as a professor of religion and as such spiritual philosophies over the pa

Dutch men confirmed as world's tallest

Image
When it comes to height, Dutch men and Latvian women tower over all other nationalities, a new study confirms. The average Dutchman is now 183cm (6ft) tall, while the average Latvian woman reaches 170cm (5ft 7in). The research,  published in the journal eLife , has tracked growth trends in 187 countries since 1914. It finds Iranian men and South Korean women have had the biggest spurts, increasing their height by an average of more than 16cm (6in) and 20cm (8in). In the UK, the sexes have gone up virtually in parallel by about 11cm (4in). "Mr Average" in Britain is now 178cm (5ft 10in) tall; Ms Average stands at 164cm (5ft 5in). This contrasts for example with men and women in the US, where the height of the nation's people started to plateau in the 1960s and 1970s. Over the century, they have seen increases of just 6cm and 5cm (a couple of inches), respectively. Indeed, Americans have tumbled down the rankings. Back in 1914, they had the third tallest

2 Fulanis arrested for attacking farmers

Two Fulanis, Bello Alahassan and Abubakar Mohammed, are currently in the grips of the Atebubu police in the Brong-Ahafo Region for allegedly pulling a pump action gun on a number of farmers. They reportedly resorted to that action after they (farmers) had complained that their (Fulanis’) cattle were destroying their crops. The incident, which happened at Hiamantsine in the Atebubu Amantin District, is being investigated by the police whilst the suspects are in police cells. Brong-Ahafo Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Christopher Tawiah, told Daily Guide that cattle belonging to Alhaji Mohammed Denjuma destroyed beans and yam farm of one Kwaku Libaleyo at Hiamantsine. Mr Kwaku Libaleyo, together with 10 others, went to the cattle ranch and confronted the two Fulani caretakers on the farm and asked them why they allowed the animals to destroy the crops. This resulted in an argument. In the confrontation that ensued, Bello pulled out a pump action gun on t
